Ephesians 5:31-33

In the New Testament there are many illustrations given to us of the relationship between Christ and the believer. What it means to be a Christian. Jesus compared salvation to birth, being born again by the Spirit of God. He said salvation is like walking through a door. “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” (John 10:9). Or salvation is like sitting down to a feast and partaking of the bounties on the table. In Ephesians chapter 5 Paul uses marriage to illustrate the relationship between Christ and the Church. “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” By the way, this helps us understand how we were saved. The Lord Jesus Christ was presented to us and the Holy Spirit said, “Will you trust Him?”

That’s how people get married by the way. Here’s a fellow and a girl and they see each other and they fall in love. They have feelings and they know each other but they are not married until they say, “I will.” That’s how you became a Christian. I knew a great deal about the Lord Jesus. That didn’t save me. I had feelings down inside toward Him. That didn’t save me. It was not until that day I said, “I will.” That’s how you’re saved. You are joined to the Lord Jesus Christ.

But now in our continued relationship with Christ we must remember that we are united with Him. We are one flesh with Him. We are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. It is a living relationship. Just as a husband and wife become one so we are one in Jesus Christ. A living relationship. A loving relationship.

A husband and wife don’t just stop with getting married. No. They live together, and they love one another. It’s a relationship that involves growth, getting to know each other better, getting to know God’s will. Are you today living as one who is married to the Lord Jesus Christ? Oh the marriage ceremony hasn’t been fulfilled yet. We’ll have that great feast up in heaven, but we are united to Him in a living relationship, a loving relationship. Let’s enjoy that relationship today.
