Ephesians 5:8-10
Don’t look back too much. You might end up going on a detour. Jesus said the person who is trying to plow the field and looks back is not really going to make it. But occasionally it doesn’t hurt us to look back and remember what we were before we met the Lord. It reminds us of what the Lord has done for us and what we ought to do in return. Ephesians 5:8-10, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit [or the fruit of the light] is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.” What were we? We were darkness and now we are light. What were we? Well, we were emptiness but now we’re producing fruit. What were we? Well, we were selfishness, now we’re living to please the Lord. We were darkness.
Can you remember those days when you were in the darkness? I can remember them. Oh, I was just a young lad, but I knew I was a sinner; and I’d go to Sunday school and church; and I’d hear the lesson and the sermon; and I was in the darkness. I’d try to read the Word of God but somehow it didn’t talk to me. I was in the darkness but praise God today I’m in the light. Not only in the light but I am the light. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord: now walk as children of light.” God is light therefore we “walk as children of light.” God is love and therefore “we walk in love,” Ephesians 5:2. We were emptiness but now we’re producing fruit to the glory of God. The fruit of the Spirit: Goodness and righteousness and truth. It’s a wonderful thing how the Holy Spirit of God changes your life to make you more like the Lord Jesus Christ.
We were selfishness. We were living for ourselves and wanting things for ourselves. Now He says we are “proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.” Not what pleases us, what is acceptable to Him. And the beautiful thing is this, as we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, what is pleasing to Him is pleasing to us. What He wants, we want because His life is being reproduced in ours.
