Ephesians 6:11-13
When you became a Christian, automatically you were enlisted into the army of the Lord. You’re not just a child of God; you’re a soldier in the army, and there’s a battle going on. Oh, the first few weeks or months of the Christian life are relatively easy, and then the enemy starts to fight. That’s when you have to read Ephesians 6:11-13 where Paul says to us today, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in the heavenly places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Now there are three commandments here: Stand, withstand, stand. Before the battle he says, stand. How? “Put on the whole armor of God.” You don’t go into the battle putting on your armor. You don’t put your armor on after the battle is over. No. He says if you’re going to stand against the devices of the devil, the strategy of Satan, you had better put on the whole armor. Every bit of it. Don’t leave any part of your spiritual anatomy unprotected. Stand. That’s before the battle. Withstand. That’s during the battle. “That ye may be able to withstand in the evil day.” Oh, it’s a marvelous thing to have all the equipment you need to fight the battle. And then after the battle is over he tells us, “and having done all, to stand.” Here is the Christian soldier standing before the battle, withstanding during the battle and standing after the battle.
Andrew Bonar use to say, “Let us be as watchful after the victory as before the battle.” That’s true! Many people have won the war and lost the victory afterward. That’s what happened to Achan and that’s what happened to King Saul and it could happen to us. Today by faith put on the armor, stand, withstand; and then when it’s all over, stand to the glory of God who gave us the victory!
