Ephesians 6:5-9

The kind of work that we do today depends on who the boss really is. Are we working for ourselves? Are working for the boss? Are we working for the company? Or are we working for the Lord? Paul tells us in Ephesians 6 verses 5 through 8 that we should do our work “as unto the Lord.” That’s the key to the Christian life. He told husbands and wives now you treat each other as Christ deals with the Church. Love one another. Serve one another, and he says the same thing to servants. “Servants, be obedient to them that are you masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.” Then he goes on to say, “With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men.”

What kind of a heart should I have today as I do my work? Well, number one, I should have a single heart. He said let your heart be singly devoted to serving Christ. You do your job not serving your master, your boss, your company. “Singleness of heart, as unto Christ.” You can’t serve two masters. You can’t have your eyes looking in two directions. You can’t be plowing and going forward and looking back. He said I’ll reward you. God will reward you. You’ll receive your reward from the Lord, “singleness of heart.” There ought to be a sincere heart, “not with eyeservice.” What in the world is “eyeservice”? You’re always watching to see if anybody else is watching, and if nobody’s watching, slack your job a little bit. Don’t work too hard. Do your job only when the boss is watching. Ah, but our boss is always watching.

We’re serving the Lord Christ, a single heart, a sincere heart, even a smiling heart. “With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men.” The joy of the Lord is our strength. Oh, we may have tasks to perform today that will not be easy. They may not be enjoyable, but if we do them as unto the Lord seeking to please Him, He’ll put a smile in our heart. Let’s have that kind of a heart today. The heart of our work ought to be a heart dedicated to the Lord.
