Today’s guest is Caio Alexandre Gonze, our first pre-teen guest on the podcast! A native of Rio de Janeiro, 12 year-old Caio describes himself as a samba player with heart and soul. From a musical family, his parents encouraged his passion for percussion when they noticed his talent at 4 years old. At Viradouro samba school, he discovered his love for the repique and quickly became well-known and got the nickname ‘Caio do Repique’ or Caio of the Repique, no last name necessary.

He says that samba is his passion and percussion is his life. In addition to the repique, he plays repique de mão, pandeiro, tantã, surdo, reco-reco, tamborim, caixa de guerra, timbal, congas e agogô. He is learning to play cavaquinho and Brazilian banjo.

He has played with artists such as Sandra de Sá, Arlindo Cruz, Xande de Pilares, Dudu Nobre, Alcione, Chrigor, Reinaldo (Príncipe do Pagode) and Carlinhos Sete Cordas.

Nowadays, he dedicates himself  more and more to improve his musicianship. He is part of the project “Sorrindo e Batucando” and he plays in the Unidos do Viradouro samba school where he is known as the mascot. In addition, he takes music classes at Maracatu Brasil and at the renowned Villa Lobos Music School where he received a scholarship to attend.
