Bio:

Juliana Cantarelli Vita is a Ph.D. Candidate in Music Education with an emphasis in Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington, and a member of The Orff Echo Editorial Board. Blending her interests in music education and ethnomusicology, Juliana has presented papers and given clinics on the topic of multicultural sensitivity, Afro-Brazilian drumming traditions, children’s musical cultures, and gender and music. She has received research grants from the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (for the work on collective songwriting at the Yakama Nation Tribal School) and the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (for the work with repatriated recordings). 

She is a recipient of the Elizabeth May (Slater) Award from the Society for Ethnomusicology for her paper on the topic of archived field recordings featuring children. As a clinician, Juliana has given more than 50 workshops in the United States, Brazil, and Europe. Inspired by her experiences and connections at Nação do Maracatu Porto Rico, she helped launch and currently directs Baque Maré, Seattle’s maracatu de baque virado ensemble.
Julianna is also a cohost on the new podcast Esse foi massa-  The podcast goal is to offer accessible, comprehensive conversations about Brazilian music, in terms of their specific sounds, as well as the cultural and historical circumstances that give them meaning.
