In Stephen King's novel, Carrie is described as being "slightly unattractive", overweight with pimples on her neck, back and arse. Brian De Palma threw this description out of the window for the film adaptation and instead spent a week shooting nude scenes with Sissy Spacek and her 20-something friends in what is one of the most gratuitous opening scenes of any horror film ever.
