For our first episode, the story you are about to hear is that of Mozn Hassan, a woman human rights defender and the founder and executive director of Nazra for Feminist Studies, a feminist organisation working in Egypt and the MENA region on gender equality and combatting violence against women. She is a laureate of the 2016 Right Livelihood Award and of the 2013 Charlotte Bunch Human Rights Defender Prize awarded to her by the Global Fund for Women. In March 2016, Mozn was summoned to appear before a judge after her participation at a UN Commission on the Status of Women. Three months later, she was prevented from travelling to a meeting in Beirut. Finally, in January 2017, her assets were frozen. These decisions are clear reprisal measures to silence her voice and stop her from participating in international advocacy. As this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution, we started asking her what it means to be a feminist activist in Egypt today.
