Episode 1 of The Herb Mendelson Story focuses on Herb's boyhood years growing up in the Dexter-Cortland section of Detroit. Faced with an unsettled family life and constant financial stress, Herb develops an incredible work ethic, discovers a love and aptitude for all things mechanical, begins dating his wife-to-be, Phyllis, and as a muscular, powerfully built young man earns a reputation as a guy nobody wanted to mess with.
