What is the function of the world tree?  It is not only the ancient story behind the origin of man-as-self, but it is also a symbol of individuation or completeness of the union of opposites, consciousness and unconscious, male and female, good and evil.   The world tree is represented as a colossal tree which supports the heavens, thereby connecting the heavens, the terrestrial world, and, through its roots, to the underworld. 

“No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.”
