A Writer's Journey: From Blank Page to Published

Episode 10: Three Keys to Getting (or Not Getting) Your Novel Published

Listen Later

Maybe we should’ve titled this episode “Three Keys to Writing a Novel Worth Publishing.”
We should probably get something straight right off the bat. If you don’t finish your novel, it won’t ever be published. It’s as simple as that.
And even if you finish your novel, whether you’re planning to go the traditional publishing route by trying to secure an agent, or you’re taking the indie trek, if you don’t write a solid story, it’s unlikely that it will ever be published.
An agent will never sign on to represent a novel that doesn’t offer an interesting and well-developed story. If you’re an indie writer, you certainly don’t want to launch a mediocre work out into the literary world.
That said, there are three keys to writing a novel (and possibly a bonus fourth key) that can actually help keep you on track for writing a novel worthy of publishing, and my co-host Terrance Zepke and I discuss them all in this episode of A Writer’s Journey.
Just to give you a sneak peak, we talk about the Three P’s (Plot, Pacing and Protagonist). We also discuss the Three C’s (Conflict, Crisis/Complication, Climax/Conclusion). Finally, the subject of Prologues gets an honorable mention.
A couple of posts mentioned in this episode are:
When to Use a Prologue
Who’s Your Protagonist
