On the surface, Whiplash is a story about a young man who wants to be one of the greatest drummers and the mentor who could help him realize his dream. Looking past the premise (and the loads of foul language), a story emerges about abuse, manipulation, and the cost of the single-minded fixation on achieving such greatness.
