In this episode of the podcast,I talked with Steve Davidson, the co-editor of the original science fiction magazine Amazing Stories. A lifelong active member of the Science Fiction fan community a few years back Steve noticed that Hasbro the one-time owner of Amazing Stories has let the trademark lapse. In this episode, we talk about how Steve became the owner of the classic trademark, the magazine, and the legacy of the OG Hugo Gernsbeck.
We also talk about the 1920s SF community highlighted Davidson’s book Cents of Wonder. The stories in this book were entries in a series of writing contests held in 1926 and 29, that used a piece of art as a story prompt. Writers could submit stories inspired by the art and Gernsbeck choose winners and honorable mentions. There was a cash prize for the top winners. The reason for this contest is simple. Gernsbeck needed to encourage new writers and expand his pool of talent.
This is a must listen for fans of Science Fiction history.
