Today's guest is Tofe Evans. He's s an Australian advocate and public speaker on mental health, and a thought leader on Practical Resilience. He's also a athlete and he's constantly trying to push his own physical limits. Most of his athletic activities are also testimonial and help raise funds for various charities and NGOs.
Some facts
Tofe was born Christopher Evans, but known almost exclusively by his nickname "Tofe" (like it rhymes with "loaf")
He's a Queenslander and is based in Brisbane but is constantly hopping around the world searching for adventures
Four years ago, Tofe simultaneously struggled with depression, anxiety and substance abuse. He thought that he wouldn't be able to escape from this complex situation.
Aware of the vicious cycle he was trapped in, taking prescription drugs that made things worse, he decided to stop taking them. And to understand why he wasn't happy.
This led to a period of inner research and looking for answers. And to his discovery of running as a healthy substitute for all types of drugs.
As a result of this iniciatic experience, Tofe came up with a new set of skills and knowledge, plus the will to help other overcame similar situations.
As part of his legacy, he wrote a book, "Everyone Has a Plan Until Sh!t Hits the Fan: How to Not Be the Bitch of Your Own Mind". 10% of the book sales goes to Livin, an Aussie NGO focused in mental health and addictions
In 2017, he was nominated for both Australian and Queenslander of the year
Among his multiple athletic endeavours there's the 60km Ultramarathon on Mount Everest, collecting money for Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis
Quotes
"I went through this heavy mental health period that suicide really did seem the only answer. Several times. It wasn't until I realised that every great that's ever lived (...) comes from a trajectory of pain. And it's knowing that 'ok, maybe this is meant to be'. And it's a matter of moving forward from it"
"Write down one hundred things you're grateful for."
"I know people that write books, 'so I can be a bestseller'. You don't write a book just so you can be a bestseller. That's a bonus. That's a byproduct of what the book is about"
"Everyone focuses on a six-pack body but only few realise a six-pack mind is more important"
"I'm talking about the ultimate endgame. And that's legacy and purpose."
"Yes, if we can condense it down to a very short sentence, my job here is to make people mentally stronger"
