A crime thriller with shades of coming-of-age set in New York City on the cusp of the AIDS crisis, CRUISING’s depiction of S&M was rightly met by the skepticism and distrust of the gay community during its production and release. In retrospect, it advocates for the recognition of both the S&M and LGBTQ communities through a tragic, terrifying, ambiguous tale of loss, betrayal, and the poisonous conservatism embodied by the then-impending Reagan administration.
