*Trigger Warning - this episode includes a brutal triple homicide
Marty Bergen was an American professional baseball player who played for the Boston Beaneaters in Major League Baseball from 1896 to 1899. He primarily served as the team's catcher, playing in 344 games during his tenure. Bergen contributed to the Beaneaters' success, helping them win National League pennants in 1897 and 1898, and securing a second-place finish in 1899. He was known for his exceptional fielding skills and strong throwing arm, being able to make accurate throws to second base without moving his feet.
In 1900, prominent outfielder Jesse Burkett regarded Bergen as the best catcher in baseball history. Although he received some Hall of Fame votes in the late 1930s, Bergen fell short of the necessary support for induction.
However, Bergen's life took a tragic turn as he exhibited signs of mental illness by 1899. He experienced hallucinations and displayed odd behavior, which led to his removal from a game and his departure from the team during a trip to Boston. On January 19, 1900, Bergen committed a heinous act, murdering his wife and two children before taking his own life. This shocking event marked the end of his life and career in a deeply tragic manner.
