In this episode, we are going to explore how the absence of dragons would have affected the books and how George’s early concept of Targaryen superpowers may have impacted - in a very negative way - the story and one of its central protagonists, Daenerys Targaryen.

In an interview last year, George reveals that he originally planned to leave the dragons out of the story and instead give the Targaryens mental powers.

“I did consider in the very early stages not having the dragons in there. I wanted the Targaryen’s symbol to be the dragons, but I did play with the notion that maybe it was like a psionic power, that it was pyrokinesis — that they could conjure up flames with their minds.:

George credits his friend and fellow fantasy author, Phyllis Eisenstein, with pushing him to include the dragons and dedicates A Storm of Swords to her.
