Episode 12: 'Year of Return'

Listen Later

The Danso Financial Team kicks off the first episode of the 2020 year discussing  2019's year of return. The year of return is an initiative of the government of Ghana that is intended to encourage African diasporans to come to Africa (specifically Ghana) to settle and invest in the continent. It was formally launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in September 2018 in Washington, D.C. as a program for Africans in the diaspora to unite with Africans. The year 2019 is symbolic as it commemorates 400 years since the first enslaved Africans touched down in Jamestown, Virginia in the United States. The program also recognizes the diaspora's achievements and sacrifices in the time since that event. The Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture have lined up a slate of activities in “celebration of the resilience of the African spirit.”

On this Episode the guys also discuss famous musician and entrepreneur Akon and his successful reinvestment in his native homeland of Senegal by taking it a step further from his lighting up Africa project which the goal is to provide electricity to all areas within Africa lacking those resources within their countries to building a city within his own country of Senegal with the funding of his cryptocurrency Akoin. "I really want to make the biggest impact in Africa for sure," Akon said during a 2013 interview with CNN. "If I could have my way, Africa would be the United States of Africa." That and many more are covered in this week's episode.
