Episode 123: Written on the Heart

Listen Later

Every architect knows the difference between a blueprint and a building. The drawing comes first, the true design; the structure that goes up is a copy of it. The writer of Hebrews says the temple in Jerusalem, the center of Israel's worship, was never the original. It was the copy. Moses built the tabernacle according to a pattern shown him on the mountain, and Jesus now serves in the true sanctuary that all the earthly ones only shadowed. Then the writer turns to Jeremiah's promise of a new covenant, quoting the longest Old Testament passage in the letter. The difference is everything: the old law was written on stone, external, a standard you looked at and strained to obey. The new is written on hearts, internal, reshaping what you actually want. Knowing God is no longer reserved for the elite; all shall know him, from the least to the greatest. And the bedrock: I will remember their sins no more. Not overlooked. Erased.
