Deborah Epperson is a recently retired scientist. Deborah worked for most of her career as a Department of Interior biologist, most recently at the U.S. Geological Survey's Wetland and Aquatic Research Center in Gainesville, FL. Prior to that, she spent 14 years working in New Orleans on protected species (marine mammals and sea turtles) issues associated with energy development in the Gulf of America. She obtained her BS and MS from the University of Florida and her Ph.D. from Clemson University.
Deborah is learning to embrace her new "retired" life. Unfortunately, part of her new life includes breast cancer. In February of this year, while on a work trip in Louisiana, Deborah got the call no one wants to get: "You have breast cancer." Her cancer diagnosis was all she needed to decide to retire. It has been a journey but she is mending from a double mastectomy and embracing life to the fullest. She enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, her horses, her dog and anything that involves water. This includes floating the Santa Fe River, fishing or relaxing at the beach.
