Do you love Squid Game? Netflix's popular Korean drama series centers around an ensemble cast of players who enter into a competition in hopes of escaping economic difficulties, but find that they're fighting for their very lives for the entertainment of the game's wealthy benefactors. While Squid Game itself was inspired by its writer/director Hwang Donghyuk's own experiences with financial disparity, it made me wonder: how often has this happened in real life?
