Episode 13: Young Black Entrepreneurs

Listen Later

In this episode I get a chance to talk to "Mr. Motivation" Tavon Parker and Jaime Orr (GJaimo) two young men that are making big entrepreneurial moves and while also giving back with highly interactive non-profit youth programs. Orr (21) follows a legacy of longtime entrepreneurship. Parker (25) is currently building an empire that will last for generations.

We start off with a Hoops conversation, as I attempt to start a family feud with a hypothetical pickup game of basketball with the Parkers' vs the Orrs' that leads us into a conversation about the evolution of AAU basketball talking the pros and cons on the game itself but also the benefits is has even in smaller communities.   I gave the guys some homework and they give me an All-time Starting Five featuring players all throughout the County.

Next, we talk about each of their non-profit ventures starting with Jaime's SMG Foundation. He talks about a change that he was looking for as he was going through some tribulations at college. That's when he and a few friends wanted to restore a feeling they used to get when they were kids living in the city.   Later, Tavon discusses a newly launched non-profit called The Advantage Program and how he wants to provide exposure to numerous opportunities so young men can see all that is possible in the world.   Both of these organizations are geared to provide a safe haven for the youth as well as teach them things about financial literacy as well as other enduring understandings they won't receive in a traditional classroom.

Furthermore, these two men are narrative changers and they provide the origins and progress they've made with their own businesses. Starting with Tavon's Lawn Care LLC and how he was able to pivot a summer job in his early teens into a Six figure business. In addition, we have the fashion savvy Jaime tell us about his clothing brand GJaimo. He gives us the inspiration behind the name, and why he went a different route when it comes to clothes.

When it comes to being an entrepreneur, a person doesn't always have to re-invent the wheel so we touch on the power of passive income as well. Little do some people know athletics and business run in their families, but comedy might be something we have to watch for as well. . .  Both men have important stories to tell so make sure you tune in, get involved and you'll likely learn something.  #GJaimo #TavonsLawnCare #Motivation #Entrepreneurs #Nonprofits
