In 2013, Jason published A Flower in the Mouth, a photobook about the culture, music and rituals of Carnaval in Pernambuco, Brazil (Visual Anthropology Press, USA).

Over 15 years and 15 countries, Gardner’s work revolved around the carnival, a festival that embodies the spirit of community, creativity, and tradition. His incredible book project, titled “We the Spirits,” reflects this philosophy, aiming to delve deeper into the themes of life, death, and the human experience.
