Your Radio Doctor with Dr. Marianne T. Ritchie

Episode 134 - More than a Mammogram

Listen Later

We were heartbroken to hear that critically acclaimed actress Kirstie Alley died at such a young age. We send a message of heartfelt sympathy to her family. Upon learning that she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer only days before her tragic end, we thought it would be helpful to replay one of our best shows of the year.

On Saturday, December 31, at 5 p.m., EST, we replayed episode 134 where host Dr. Marianne Ritchie chatted with Jane R. Sharp, MD and Samir A. Shah, MD, FACG, FASGE, AGAF about the importance of screening for all cancers.

For women, your cancer prevention plan includes “MORE than just a mammogram.” There is a common misconception that colorectal cancer is a man’s disease, leading many women to focus only on an annual mammogram and gynecology exam. Not true. Over a lifetime the risk is about the same in men and women. And… colon cancer can present differently in women than men. In addition, more people DIE from colorectal cancer than from breast cancer. Screenings for ALL cancers are important. The screening age for colorectal cancer is now 45… for all people at average risk, and maybe younger depending on your personal and family history.
