Good evening, listeners! We have a great episode for this week, as host Richard Aldous speaks with Dimitar Bechev about Russia’s influence in the Balkans before discussing Gustav Mahler with Barton Swaim.

First, Dimitar Bechev, a Visiting Scholar at the Center for European Studies, Harvard, and the Director of the European Policy Institute, Sofia, comes on the show to discuss the results of a recent referendum in Bosnia that showed both the extent of Russia’s influence in the region as well as its own limits in the Balkans.

Then, Barton Swaim returns to the podcast to talk about Gustav Mahler’s “all encompassing” symphonies, how his life informed his music, and what Mahler meant (and means) for music.
