After making a few billion dollars for Disney at the helm of the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films, Gore Verbinski got a $135 million budget from Paramount to make an animated cowboy lizard movie. What they got for that investment was a strange, sometimes offputting tale populated with some of the ugliest characters this side of Sid's bedroom with story elements that were a mix of Chinatown and old spaghetti westerns.
