Sugar! We all crave it. We long for it. When we have a tough day at the office, we reach for it to comfort us and aid us in our time of need. How could we not? It's delicious and makes everything taste just a little better.
But, sugar is not good for us in any shape, form, or variant. More disturbingly, sugar, at least basic table sugar abundant in so much of our food, is not even vegan! That's right; you may have heard that regular white sugar is non-vegan because they filter it using animal bone char- that is, charred and powdered animal bone. But did you know the US, unlike so many other countries, still practices this ridiculous method of bleaching and "purifying" table sugar?
On average, Americans consume nearly 100 pounds of sugar per year, or 30 teaspoons a day. These quantities are disturbing because sugar is also a toxin. It contains no nutritional value and lacks essential proteins, minerals, and vitamins, making sugar one of the worst and most poisonous ingredients in the Western diet. It can have harmful effects on our metabolism and contribute to the development of numerous serious health conditions and diseases. Too much sugar is detrimental to the body and promotes inflammation and disease.
