Welcome to the Things That Shape Us podcast. My name is Jonathan Wymer and I'm joined by James Gary to discuss a various range of subjects that are all related to one idea: How those things shape our lives.

In this episode, James and I discuss ONE THING that shaped our lives with Sean Barlow (a friend from our old film school & editor). Sean opens the conversation with the subject of comedy and his perspective on what he finds funny. His love for situational comedy leads us down a path discussing some of our favorite comedic moments from our favorite films. We also discuss how comedy can be found in some of the darkest or grittiest parts of a movie that a general audience would find uncomfortable. We even talk about contemporary meme culture and the comedy that exists there. Sean's background in film includes attending the same film school as James and I, and he's found his niche in editing narrative film. This takes us into a segue of comedic timing with cutting scenes and that can be effective on an emotional level for setting up a horrific moment.
