Episode 142 of the Common Weal Policy Podcast
You can download the episode directly here.
This week, Craig talks to Constitution expert Elliot Bulmer about Heads of State, what they do and how we could select one. The UK is currently undergoing a transition of Head of State for the first time in the lifetime of most of the current population but in other countries, this transition happens frequently. In this challenging and perhaps controversial episode Elliot discusses the pros and cons of various options for an independent Scotland's Head of State such as keeping the monarchy versus transitioning to a Republic. He also discusses whether the Kingdom of Scotland should have a Governor-General, or whether the Republic of Scotland should elect its President in a general election as Ireland does or whether that selection process should be restricted to Parliamentarians as Germany does (and as Scotland selects our First Minister). He also goes into detail about what powers a Head of State should and, crucially, should not have.
Common Weal's work is only possible thanks to our generous supporters who regularly donate an average of £10 per month. If you would like to help us build our vision of an All of Us First Scotland, you can do so here: https://commonweal.scot/product-category/support-us/
