I regret that while Fly Boys tells some compelling stories, from my knowledge of the arial war in the Pacific, it’s somewhat disjointed weaving personal experiences with in the story of the Pacific air war. It does however go into great detail telling the tale of Doolittle’s raid. Yes, John managed to tell that story well and added a few new facts. Although I doubt his claim by the Japanese that Doolittle’s raiders machine gunned a Tokyo hospital. The B-25 (Mitchell) was a medium bomber and carried a crew of five — pilot & copilot, bombdier, navigator/radio operator, & flight engineer. It only had four machine guns, two forward guns manned by the bombdier  & a top turret manned by the flight engineer.The bombardier would be too busy dropping bombs from low altitude to use the machine guns & the top turret guns could not be depressed enough to engage ground targets.
