In 1685, under the provisions of King James’s Witchcraft Act, Rebecca Fowler was tried and executed by hanging in Maryland for performing what the court described as ‘evil and diabolical arts.’ She is no legend-her name remains neatly inscribed within the colonial ledgers at St. Mary’s City- the only recorded execution for witchcraft within all of Maryland’s history.
Dr. Bill and Deb take us back to the swamps and plantations of the seventeenth-century Chesapeake where superstition, religion, and survival all were able to merge within the same dimension of existence. They follow a onetime indentured servant who became a landowner later in life, accused by her worker of wasting his body and soul through unseen means. What really happened on Fowler’s Delight? And what does her story tell about how fear becomes law?
By the original indictment, the colonial record, and the echoes that remain in Maryland’s ground, one of America’s earliest witchcraft trials is hereby brought to light — a tale just as haunting yet equally heartbreakingly human.
