El Niño is forced off shore by the south flowing Japan current. It gets its name from the capricious or abnormal appearance thought to cyclic ie every ninth year. However,  due to our continuing satellite observation we have found it’s always with us, but it’s effects may vary with  the apparent width of the current.   The width of the phenomenon  may mean more rain for California.
