Although Letta Belli and a few of the other women heading to Dawson know it, Barabal, Malvina, and the Count have no idea that Lorcan is onboard with them on the sternwheeler, the SS Monarch, as it is about to head up the Yukon River toward the gold fields. Lorcan's immediate problem is that he does not have passage, but his bigger problem is that Barabal, in the company of the Count, only now thinks of him as "that boy" - if at all.
