In today's episode we're talking to Laurel Behnke of Jammin Whippets, the owner of the current Guiness World Record holding dock diving dog, a whippet named Sounders. We talk about how she started in the sport and the transformation from pursuing it as a hobby, to setting records.
Laurel has owned Whippets since 1993 and has competed in obedience, conformation and agility with a variety of breeds. After working at an Animal Hospital as an assistant for 10 years, she has owned Laurel’s Pet Grooming since 1999. Together with her husband, she competes in Racing, Open Field Coursing (hunting), Lure Coursing, Barn Hunting, Dock Diving, Coon Dog Water Trials (with the whippets) and occasionally Conformation. They live in Olympia, Washington, but compete across the country.
Laurel’s kennel, Jammin Whippets, is an AKC Breeder of Merit that breeds for sport and to meet the Whippet standard, which describes a racing and rabbit coursing hound. She believes in breeding towards that goal - and to maintain a dog that can excel at the job it was created to do; race and hunt rabbits, and look beautiful doing it while continuing to be fabulous, healthy pets. Her dog, Sounders, is the world record holder in several dock dog categories, most recently, he achieved the Dock Dog World Record Outdoor Speed Retrieve for the second time, and Dock Dog World Record Outdoor Big Air with a jump of 32'02" and his record with North America Diving Dog and the Guinness World Record is 36' 2".
