In 1941, a quiet night outside Cape Girardeau, Missouri took a strange turn when Reverend William Huffman was called to pray over victims of what authorities initially believed was a plane crash. Instead, according to the story later passed down through his family, he arrived at a scene involving a damaged disk-shaped craft and three small bodies unlike anything he had ever seen. A local newspaper photographer, Garland D. Fronabarger of the Southeast Missourian, was reportedly present and may have taken a photograph before the military arrived and secured the site. No article ever appeared in the local paper, and the alleged photograph has never surfaced. Decades later the story emerged through Huffman’s granddaughter and entered UFO research circles as one of the earliest reported crash cases in the United States, predating Roswell by six years. Whether remembered history, misunderstood event, or something stranger, the Cape Girardeau incident remains one of the most intriguing and little-known stories in American UFO lore.
