Episode #16: The Real Beginning – Telling the story of John L. Sullivan

Listen Later

Good Morning WeiRdos!

Today I gave everyone an update of the Strong Boy Production for our teaser shooting October 27th. For those of you who don't know, the titular character is John L. Sullivan, America's true first heavyweight champion.

And for me, this is the real beginning of Gung-ho WeiRdo: Trying to Make a Movie because for the first time, I am actually trying to make a feature length film, get investments, get distribution, and make some money. Damn right!

I mentioned a few things in the episode that I wanted to put in the show notes. A big shout out to BB's Jazz Blues and Soups, they will be hosting John L. Sullivan and Co. the day of the shoot.  A big shout out to The Repertory Theater of St. Louis, they will be costuming John L. Sullivan and Co. the day of the shoot and working hard in the weeks leading up to it.

Here are some of the books I've been reading, tremendously interesting and massively important to this production.

Christopher Klein's Strong Boy: The Life and Times of John L. Sullivan, America's First Sports Hero

Donald Barr Chidsey's John The Great: the Times and Life of a Remarkable American, John L. Sullivan

John L. Sullivan's  I Can Lick any Son of a Bitch in the House

I also want to give a huge shout out to the author of a book that is on my list to read but I've not yet gotten to:

Paul Beston's Boxing Kings: When American Heavyweights Ruled the Ring
