Swords and Satire

Episode 169 - The Secret of Nimh

Listen Later

We have a rare gem for you, our faithful listeners, in our discussion this week of the whimsical fantasy film about death, torture, and constant threat of bodily harm, The Secret of Nimh! And you may be surprised that a film from 1982 features a female protagonist, who is a single mother of four, and who shows her mettle not through violence, but through strength of will and courage of heart. But it probably passed because most of the characters are talking animals. Well, that’s why we love fantasy, and horror, because these are genres that allow creators to explore characters and themes outside of the norm, and get us to think a little harder about the way we construct our shared reality. Happy listening!
