The writer was attending a kick-off of something titled the NBA/European League, and was to “awarded” the Stuttgart franchise.
Each potential franchise owner stood up and “pledged” $100,000 (2005 $)to the “league”…
He looked around and discovered there was no there—there…. 
When it was his turn, he stood up and announced, “Stuttgart Passes.” The world did not end, but the silence was deafening…
