At what point does a glass of wine to relax become a habit? A what point does it become an addiction? Mindy Smith-Bernard is a counsellor with an MSW who specializes in addictions, specifically alcoholism, and it's more common than you think.
Mommy wine culture - it's everywhere - it's on wine glasses and Facebook posts. Mom's brunch? You know the wine will be flowing - it's become normal and expected, to the point where Moms who don't drink are criticized and judged. Why? It's an easy way to cope with stress - and being a Mom ain't easy. In our culture we want a quick fix - a "pill for every ill" - we want relief now.
It's not that Moms don't know the value of self-care - they have the best intentions to do yoga, read, meditate or connect with a friend - all great ways to de-stress, but when life is crazy busy, self-care is often the first thing to go. It's just much easier to have a glass of wine while the kids play at your feet. Part of the problem is no one thinks it's a problem - we've created a culture of high functioning alcoholics - people believe that if they can hold down a job, take care of the kids and the household that there's nothing wrong with finishing a bottle of wine.
We "other" addiction - addiction is for homeless people without jobs drinking out of a brown bag on a park bench - not for high functioning Moms, right?
