It's in the nature of wealth and poverty that those living with often have no understanding of the lives of those who live without. The less one has to struggle through life, the less capable they are of grappling with struggles or understanding the experiences of those who have lived more challenging existences. There is a genuine bubble of safety that can't be pierced by facts, and leads those with power to live in a different physical and mental reality from everyone else. Today we talk about military culture, the history of mathematics, and South African racial politics as we take a dive into the distorted worldviews that power grants you. Of course, no one is insulated from this. All of us view things through a lens of personal experience that is, by its nature, incomplete. That's why today's episode comes with a recommendation: to check out Allsides.com, a resource to aggregate and compare reporting across the ideological spectrum. You see, whatever source you get your news from never has to lie to you to get you to believe the world works according to its biased viewpoint. It only needs to selectively present (or ignore) information. The more you see things from other perspectives, the more you make your own nuanced and informed.But all of that is secondary to the point of this podcast: talking to people directly.
