The Back of Japan

Episode 18: Stuffing and Some Sado Gold

Listen Later

Happy Thanksgiving, you Backers!

First off, I’m THANKFUL for you and your ears on this holiday, but not so sentimental towards stuffing. It’s a calorie-filled overhyped breaded garnish, not a necessity! Rant over.

Today, we’re digging deep (pun intended) into the history of Niigata’s own Sado Gold Mine, from its roots as a medieval silver haven to its role in fueling Japan’s national ambitions during the Edo period. But as a newly-minted UNESCO site, the skeleton’s stashed in the Mine’s tunnels are coming back into the sunlight.

So grab your spade, loosen that belt for a bit, and let’s strike gold beneath the surface of Niigata’s shiny past.

Later, you Turkeys 🦃✨
