False Shepherds have distorted God's Word and watered down the cost of following Jesus. (thus our new picture of Coptic martyrs at the hands of ISIS terrorists). Judgment always begins in the household of faith (1 Peter 4:17). God is exposing falsehood and purifying His Bride. He has always done that throughout Church History and is doing so now in an accelerated way.
