Figures from the Office For National Statistics (ONS) indictate that in 2019 there were 2.9m single parent households in the UK, with women making up 90% of all single parents. When these figures are broken down by race, black families make up the highest proportion of single parent households in the UK at 24% with white and asian families coming in at 10% and 8% respectively. With the figures in black families being more than double their white and asian counter parts, in episode 19 we discuss the possible causes for this large disparity and given that women easily make up the largest percentage of single parent households we explore whether there is any merit in laying the blame squarely with the decisions made by black women or whether it is in fact black men that are not stepping up to their responsibilities.
