दुर्योधन के सरोवर के जाने के पूर्व कौरवों की सम्पूर्ण 11 अक्षोहिणी सेना समाप्त हो चुकी थी। कृतवर्मा, कृपाचार्य और अश्वत्थामा के अतिरिक्त कोई भी महारथी दुर्योधन की सेना में शेष नहीं बचा था। धृतराष्ट्र के अन्तिम 12 पुत्रों का वध करने के बाद भीमसेन ने दुर्योधन को भी गदा युद्ध में मार दिया।

Before Duryodhana left for the lake, the entire 11 Akshohini army of the Kauravas had been destroyed. Apart from Kritavarma, Kripacharya and Ashwatthama, none of the great charioteers were left in Duryodhana's army. After killing the last 12 sons of Dhritarashtra, Bhimsen also killed Duryodhana in a mace fight.
