Two movies titled The Box enter, only one will leave (with its title) as Herman Davis, Kindal Duffy, and Robert Rau watch a Gabrielle Union crime thriller and the last movie Richard Kelly ever made to determine which one deserves to be called The Box.
Both of these movies were new to us, and, chances are, to most of you. The big advantage is neither movie seemed like it was going to be more interesting than the other, which can ruin a double feature. The first one we watched was from 2007 and starred a post “Bring it On” Gabrielle Union as a disgraced cop trying to solve a multiple homicide. The most obvious flaw is the movie had no actual boxes, just metaphorical boxes.
Next up was a spin on a classic Twilight Zone episode done by the guy who made Donnie Darko. Would you press a button, randomly killing someone just to make a million dollars? And that’s 1976 dollars, which — thanks to the internet — we know is $4.2 million. It does help the movie actually had a box, fulfilling the title, but is that enough to beat out a mediocre crime thriller? Listen if you dare.
