Infinite Threads: Conversations on Love, Connection, and Compassion

Episode 196: “The Moment You Almost Went Back (And What Pulled You Forward)”

Listen Later

Welcome back to Infinite Threads. I’m your host, Bob.

This week we’ve been walking through something so many of us know far too well: the pull of the past. The ways it whispers. The ways it tempts. The ways it pretends to be safety when it’s really stagnation.

And today, we arrive at one of the most delicate crossroads in the journey:

That one moment.That split-second choice.When you almost… went back.

You know the moment.

You were tired. Overwhelmed. Maybe you felt unseen.Maybe everything good you’ve built started to feel unfamiliar or hard to hold. And then—out of nowhere—came the old version of you.The one who used to lash out, or run, or retreat. The one who used to chase validation, numb out, give in, give up.

You almost picked up the phone. You almost sent the message. You almost said the words you promised yourself you’d never say again.

And maybe you did go back. Even just a little.

But today’s episode isn’t about shame.

It’s about the thread you didn’t break.

The one you grabbed at the last second. The one made of your growth. The one made of love.

Let’s talk about what stops us from falling back all the way.

Because it’s not always some loud, dramatic intervention. Sometimes, it’s subtle.

Sometimes it’s a song. A child’s laugh.A sentence you once heard in a podcast or sermon.Sometimes it’s just… a breath. And in that breath, you remember who you are now.

You remember the promises you made to yourself. The person you’ve been becoming. The version of you that your past would never recognize.

This is the holy work of self-awareness.

Not just noticing the pull, but recognizing your power in that moment.

Even if your hands were shaking, even if your heart was beating fast, even if you didn’t know what came next—

You said no. Or not this time. Or not like this.

You stayed. You breathed. You chose forward.

Here’s the truth: we don’t become free from the past all at once.

We build the muscle of choosing differently, moment by moment.

We catch ourselves earlier. We name the pattern sooner. We feel the old wound flare up and respond from love anyway.

That’s progress. That’s grace. That’s what changes the story.

So today, I want to invite you to celebrate the near-misses.

The times you didn’t spiral. The times you stopped the cycle mid-sentence.The times you caught yourself just in time.

That’s not weakness. That’s power.

You are not the version of yourself you used to be.And every time you feel that pull, but don’t let it define you—that’s a win. That’s healing. That’s freedom taking root.

You may still hear that voice from the past. But you don’t have to obey it.You don’t have to run toward it.You don’t have to become it again.

You’re walking forward now, even if it’s with trembling feet.

And that… is enough.

Thanks for listening to Infinite Threads. This was Episode 196: “The Moment You Almost Went Back (And What Pulled You Forward).”

I’ll meet you here again tomorrow.

Until then, keep choosing love. Even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.

Because the past may call your name…

But the future is waiting with open arms.
