Episode 2: 6 Critical Steps to Making the Perfect Hire

Listen Later

Adding a new team-member can be tricky and possibly intimidating. A great deal rides on your decision to bring this person into your company. It isn’t enough to trust that their interviewing skills will transfer into a contributor for years to come.

This week’s episode of Been There Done That covers the key steps to finding the perfect employee for your position. Breaking it down into simple, easy-to-follow steps, CJ demystifies the process by giving insight into what’s worked best (and worst) for him. There’s a time to be cheap with your hire and a time to spend some dough. We cover all of that here…

6 Critical Steps to Hiring the Right Employee

  1. Decide exactly what you want
    1. Write down the type of personality
    2. Decide the type of experience
    3. Define what the perfect candidate looks like 3 years from now and what happened along the way
    4. Fill the pipeline with candidates
      1. Get as many candidates in the pipeline as possible
      2. Don’t forget to utilize social (LinkedIn is a great place to start-this is where 94% of recruiters put their time)
      3. Utilize your network of colleagues to find someone they would refer
      4. Talk with your staff about possible people who can fulfill this need we have (incentivizing your employees can be a good motivator)
      5. Check out online job-sites
      6. Hire a recruiter
      7. Pre-Interview
        1. Start by sending the candidate a set of questions that takes thought and clear ideas through email
        2. Schedule a phone call (when using the phone is critical-otherwise...move on to the next step!)
        3. Schedule a meeting at the office (recommended to use at least 1 hour-you’ll be happy you did this if you are planning to spend at least 2-3 years with this person)
        4. Interview
        5. Do a personality profile
        6. IMPORTANT: CHECK REFERENCES!
