Ableism is the discrimination of and social prejudice against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior. At its heart, ableism is rooted in the assumption that disabled people require ‘fixing’ and defines people by their shortcomings.
My progression through the world of academia hasn’t been a typical one, for a number of reasons. I didn’t set out to be a teacher. I didn’t set out to be anything. I have flitted from passion to passion and happened upon opportunities and learnt what I needed to as I went. It turns out that this is a bit of a problem, which I will try to explain.
