In this episode, Brandon Clarke of Brandon Clarke Designs explains how he intuitively creates artwork that inspires people to discover who they are in a new way. His unique techniques, like flipping the canvas around, inspire people to pull back their own stories, take an honest look, and find freedom in self-discovery.
My favorite message from Brandon today is to do the hard work of finding out who you are & loving yourself fully; then, all the other good things in life will fall into place.
Art Bio
As a second-generation artist, Brandon inherited his artistic abilities from his grandmother. Brandon’s introduction to the art world was discovered in the back of his grandmother’s house, where he used to paint with her as a child. Although his style of painting differs from his grandmother, her teachings are ever present in his work. Thus, Brandon sought fit to share his interpretation of art and life through the lenses of abstract expression.
Brandon’s work aims to spark awareness and surprise to his viewer to encounter a fundamental question: “Who are you, really?” The main concept of his art explores all the dimensions of the traditional canvas structure itself, with the intent to expose many hidden messages. In addition, his technique and material choice express literal and metaphorical characteristics on the canvas to imply the question, “Who are we really within the framework of our lives?”
Artist Statement
Brandon’s art focuses on the power of self-awareness through the juxtaposition of form and color on a canvas. He uses words, color, and compositions on a canvas to spark awareness and surprise in order to encounter a fundamental question: “Who are you, really?” His work's physical and visual tension guides our ability to seek truth by honoring our brokenness. Although Brandon mostly works with acrylics, spray paint, and pastels, he also encompasses other mixed media into his work when needed. This helps his viewers see the many visual entry points and feel free to apply their experiences to the marks on the canvas. Brandon’s work expresses through material, color, and context the most important part of authenticity: transparency.
