It is a profound almost sacrilegious statement to even utter the words, “democracy doesn’t work." Yet, if we are honest, the current system is causing an internal decay of the greatest democratic system to ever be created. The easy targets are discussed: corrupt and incompetent politicians on both sides of the aisle, activist mainstream media instead of news reporting and non-partisan investigative journalism, and the proliferation of social media as a news source. However, we often fail to look inside of ourselves, each of us, the 'voter' and evaluate our own lack of thinking. We fail to look at our intellectual laziness, and our hyper-partisanship. The ancients back to Greece with Socrates and Plato warned us very specifically what can happen when democracy goes bad--we are now living this out. The parallels between the warnings issued in the 4th century BC and reality in America in 2020 are striking. Democracy doesn't have to die, but it will if we are not careful.
